History
Until the end of the 1980s, Swedish State Railways (SJ) was the dominant player in Sweden when it came to procuring trains.
In 1988, responsibility for Sweden’s railway infrastructure was transferred from Swedish State Railways (SJ) to the newly established Swedish National Rail Administration (Banverket). The deregulation of rail services began in 1990, allowing regional public transport authorities to procure their own rail services. This opened the market to more operators beyond SJ.
As these changes took place, Swedish State Railways (SJ) also ceased to be responsible for procuring trains for regional rail services. In 1999, the regional public transport authorities therefore established Transitio as a jointly owned company to coordinate the procurement, financing and management of trains. Today, Transitio is owned by 20 regions.
